Working with a remote consultant: what to expect

A remote delivery partner can out-deliver an on-site one if the rhythm is right. Here is the rhythm we use.

A remote delivery partner can out-deliver an on-site one if the rhythm is right. Presence does not equal progress; decisions and dated steps do.

The rhythm we use is simple. A weekly working session to review status and unblock. A written summary after every session so nothing relies on memory. Same-day replies on weekdays during US and South Africa business hours so decisions do not wait on geography.

What makes remote work is the same thing that makes any project work: a clear plan, a named owner, and a written record. Remote just makes the written record more important, because there is no hallway conversation to fall back on.

If you are considering a remote consultant, ask how they communicate, how fast they reply, and what you will receive in writing each week. Good answers to those three questions tell you most of what you need to know.
