Why projects stall — and how to restart them

Most projects don't fail in a dramatic moment. They drift. Here is how to spot the drift early and restart with momentum.

Most projects do not fail in a dramatic moment. They drift. A deadline slips, a decision is deferred, a vendor goes quiet, and the work quietly stops moving. By the time someone notices, the plan is fiction and the budget is gone.

The first sign of drift is usually a status report that says everything is fine. If three weeks of reports look identical and no decisions are being logged, the project has effectively paused even if no one has said so.

Restarting is simpler than people fear. Confirm what is actually done. Confirm what is genuinely blocked. Re-baseline the plan against today, not against the original hope. Name one owner for the next milestone and a date they will hit it.

Momentum returns fast when the next step is small, owned, and dated. The job of a project manager through a restart is to make the next step obvious and to protect it from new noise.
